Directed by Pa. Ranjith, known for his works including Kabali and Kaala, who co-assisted in writing to Tamil Prabha. The film stars the multi-talented Vikram in the ritual role along with Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan and Daniel Caltagirone. It is bankrolled by K. E. Gnanavel Raja under the production banners Neelam Productions and Studio Green.
Is Thangalaan Based On A True Story?
Thangalaan means Son of Gold, and its story revolves around the British era. The film gained huge attention for being based on the KGF, but how accurate is this?
The film is not completely based on a true story. However, the filmmakers have taken inspiration from real-life events. The director himself stated in several interviews that the film is a historical drama set against the backdrop of Kolar Goal Fields, which around the lives of mine workers who discovered Gold in the 19th century.
Tamil Prabha, who wrote the script, has done extensive research on this subject by referring to the documentary novel Living Dangerously by Fanny Emily Penny and several fictional books based on Tamil folklore. Additionally, he interacted with the descendants of those who worked in the Kolar Goal Field.
Pa. Ranjith worked on the script for approximately four years before finalizing it. Although the original idea came in 2014 and he narrated the story to Vikram, the director was busy with multiple projects at that time, hence the project was delayed.
Where to Watch Thangalaan?
Thangalaan received mixed reviews from the critics but the fans positively responded. The cast’s performance gained widespread appreciation especially Vikram in Thangalaan’s character. However, the VFX and screenplay were considered to be the weakest part of the film.
The film was released in theatres on 15 August 2024 and is currently available for streaming on Netflix in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.
The makers gave a green light to the sequel of the film. Yes, you heard right and the sequel is tentatively titled Thangalaan 2 with Ranjith returning as the director and Vikram reprising his role as Thangalaan Muni.
